Fire

If you discover a fire:

    1. Immediately break the glass of the nearest fire alarm point.
    2. Warn colleagues in the vicinity
    3. Telephone extension 2222 (01793 444510 from a mobile phone) and give the operator details of the location, size and nature (e.g. Machinery, paper, on/in desk etc.) of the fir​e.
    4. Leave the building by the nearest safe exit, DO NOT USE LIFTS.​
    5. Gather in the East car park.
    6. Do not leave the site or attempt to remove your car from the multi-storey or East car park as this could hinder the movement of emergency traffic.

    STFC staff should gather in the East car park.

    Do not re-enter the building until notified by the Chief Incident Control Officer (CICO).​

    Medical Emergencies

    Serious Injury

    ​For serious injuries or incapacitation:​

    1. Dial 2222 from the nearest telephone or 01793 444510 from a mobile phone, and ask for First Aid Assistance.
    2. Give exact location (building & room).
    3. Cope with the immediate emergency to make the casualty safe.

    Minor Injury

    1. Contact local First Aider​.
    2. If the identity and location of the nearest First Aider is not known, dial 2222 or 01793 444510 from a mobile phone.​​

    Mental Health

    If you are experiencing any type of mental health crisis and/or worsening of an exisiting mental health issue, please contact a Mental Health First Aider at Swindon. 

    Reporting a Near Miss / Incident 

    All accidents, health and safety incidents, including fires and near misses (incidents that have not resulted in injury) must be reported using the 'Report Incident​' portal link below, recording the date/time and location of the incident, those involved, and a brief description of the incident. Please see UKRI guidance. In order to facilitate subsequent investigation it is important that following an incident or accident, equipment, machinery etc., should be left untouched unless by so doing a further hazard would be created.​


    Staff Working Alone

    Lone working within the UKRI Office Estates, which includes Polaris House, is covered under the UKRI H&S Lone Working Framework and STFC SHE Code SC01 Staff wishing to work alone should discuss the risks with their Line Manager and agree a safe system of work. If there are any foreseeable hazards they should be recorded in a risk assessment together with the control measures needed to combat the risk . Line Managers/Supervisors should be aware of the requirement to provide adequate supervision under these circumstances.
