​They should be trained for the systems that they are authorised to operate to ensure that they have:
  • ​a good working knowledge of the layout and operation of the functional safety system
  • a clear understanding of actions to take in the event of any alarms or other warning devices being active
  • knowledge of those responsible for operation and maintenance, including out of hours contacts, in the event of a fault with the system
  • a clear understanding on how to report system faults or hazardous events during operation
This training will be provided by departments and will usually be bespoke for each specific system the individual is authorised to operate.​
​As frequently as necessary, but at least every 5 years or following a major change or a significant period of non-operation
