Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Users

Two types of on the job training should be provided for operators/users of LEV.

  • A demonstration of how to operate and maintain the system should be provided by a competent person – for a new system this should be the commissioning/handover engineer. For an existing system this could be an experienced user/colleague.
  • A briefing provided by the work supervisor covering:
    • The harmful nature of the substances in use;
    • How exposure may occur;
    • How the LEV system works;
    • Methods of working to that get the best from the LEV;
    • How to check the LEV is working;
    • The consequences of LEV not working; and
    • What to do if something goes wrong.

Hand tool Users

Effective training and supervision of hand tool users will ensure they are used as intended. 
Users should be made aware of what to:

  • Look at (the key components);
  • Look for (fault finding and what are acceptable standards); and
  • Do, as regards:
    • Reporting faults;
    • Who to report to; and
    • When tools should be taken out of service.
Managers supervising others working on scaffold,

  • Scaffold Awareness Training – 1 day, refresher ½ day; and
  • Managers and Supervisors of work at height training – 1 day, refresher ½ day

Specific training may be available for individual items of equipment provided by their manufacturer or others, for example for lathes.

Depending on their complexity, information and training should be provided for users of machinery in line with the guidance given in Appendix 3.
